Social Worker

Welcome to the 2022-2023 School Year!

My name is Michelle Halverson, and I am the school social worker at Sibley East Elementary. This is my fifth year with Sibley East Schools and tenth year as a licensed school social worker.  Many people don't know exactly what school social workers do. In a nutshell, school social workers are the link between home, school, and community. See info below to learn more about school social workers and the many hats we wear! No two days are ever the same!

School social workers can support your student and family in many ways.

The role of the social worker includes:

  • Provision of evidence-based education, behavior, and mental health services
  • Promotion of a school climate and culture conducive to student learning and teaching excellence and
  • Maximization of access to school-based and community-based resources

My goal this year is to help build and develop a strong social and emotional program at Sibley East Elementary. My desire is for all students to develop and demonstrate the five social/emotional competencies (CASEL) :

  • Self-Awareness
  • Self-Management
  • Social Awareness
  • Relationship Skills
  • Responsible Decision Making

I will be offering the following student support groups as needed:

  • ADHD: helps child improve skills in organization, communication, self-concept, listening, reaching goals, relationships
  • Anxiety: helps child find ways to cope with anxiety and stress
  • Family change: this group discusses facts about divorce, sharing feelings related to divorce, help children find coping strategies to deal with divorce; support to know they are not alone
  • Friendship/Social Skills: recognize feelings of others, appropriate ways to relate to others, and appropriately dealing with conflict
  • Grief and Loss: explore stages of grief and learn coping strategies
  • Self-esteem: helps students develop positive self-concept by doing activities that bring out their strengths and help them see their greatness
  • New Student: develop coping skills and meet other new students
  • Zones of Regulation: students will learn the four zones and feelings associated with each zone; develop a toolbox to help manage their emotions
Please take a look at the quick links on the left. You will find permission forms for support groups and individual sessions, as well as a resources link, which has resources for grief camps, supervision guidelines, car safety, school linked mental health program, family facilitator program, and much more!"

Please feel free to reach out to me if you would like to learn more about what I can do or how I can help your student succeed.
